When I was a kid, the chorus of summer was a mix of “CLOSE THE DOOR!” and “TURN THE HOSE OFF!” because my parents were tired of paying to cool the outside and having ponds next to the foundation of the house. Needless to say, there was some peeing in bushes and drinking from the hose, both of which our neighbors probably scoffed at, but it makes for good stories later on. So when I found these water bottles, it jogged my memory, and I passed the torch, er…hose I mean, to Ana.
We just set Eleni in the water, diaper and all. I definitely don’t have the time or money to wash ten outfits a day and she’s going to get the diaper disgusting anyways, so go for it baby. Oh, that reminds me! ta daaaaaa!
Lazy Mom’s Guide to Summer
I just set them in the yard and let them go for it. Obviously everyone is going to end up disgusting and muddy, but that’s nothing a little hosing off in the shower can’t fix. Kids are pretty good at entertaining themselves. My Mom’s rule was, “If you tell me your bored, I can find you something to do…” which was always cleaning. The same applies here. We do minimal activities. We have karate and we go to the library and park. And that’s it. They have their whole lives to be confined to a schedule. Childhood is so brief, I try to let them actually be kids. Not small adults.
That being said, I’m not going to police the food either. Popsicles for lunch? Fine. We have dinner all together every night and Ana is pretty good about balancing out her less nutritious things with fruit, yogurt, cheese, hot dogs, etc.
Also, I do a lot of saying ‘yes’ and less of saying ‘no’. Is it freaking hot to sit outside in the sun at the local ice cream place? Yes. Will everyone most likely have a sugar high and nap time will be whack? Absolutely. Will it kill us? Nope. Will I remember Eleni accidentally smashing her face into a chocolate malt and Ana laughing until she pees her pants forever? Hell yes. So I say sure when Ana asks for a random ice cream stop. She asked to play in a creek? It’s probably not super clean and yeah you ended up with a leech and flipped a lid, but sure. Go for it.
And that’s it!
Here are some photos of playing with the hose and Chris using a hot grill lid as a shield.
