HA! You thought I meant a baby, didn't you?
We're still not so patiently waiting right along with you and all the people calling us asking if we've had her yet. Your countdown is 10 days until our ESTIMATED due date, but it could be less. Or more...
ANYWAYS! This is our newest member as of this moment. Presenting.....
TA-DA! Pretty sure our little turtle buddy is a dude, but we know for sure he's freaking awesome. Poor Chris came home one day and Ana and I just had a turtle tank setup. What happened was our Beta Fish buddy died and Chris told us that we didn't have to wait for him to pick out a new fish, (pretty sure we blew the whole "you don't have to wait for me" thing) but when we got to the fish store, Ana spotted the turtles.
It's totally not Ana's fault though.
Since childhood turtles have been on my "that would be a super rad pet" list, but my Mom and Grandma both panicked over salmonella (my Mom's FIRST comment after I told her about turtle bud was "They can carry salmonella!!") and then Ana's old daycare had two turtles in a tank as class pets, which rekindled my "I REALLY want a turtle one day" reminder.
So we got the turtle.
We got pretty lucky in the kid department in how Ana REALLY LOVES taking care of all our critter family members. Actually, most of the time we have to tell her something is a little above her abilities. So she gets a great kick out of the things she CAN do, like feeding and scooping things out of the tank for cleaning, and changing filters. Hell, she even picks up dog poop without complaint.
On top of that, she loves to spoil them. Turtle has three different kinds of food. Pellets, which were hard for him to bite, so we got tiny little food log pellets that make him look like he's got a little turtle cigar when he bites them, and freeze dried shrimp because "turtles LOVE shrimps!"
He's grown on Chris too, who just last night went racing over to the tank because we thought he was stuck in his drift wood (he was just pushing it around the tank) and has mostly gotten over the shock of getting a Turtle Bud.
As you can probably tell if you've read this far, we haven't found a name that sticks.
We've just been calling him 'Turtle' or 'Myrtle' or the occasional 'Edwin'.
