I know, I know. More animals. But these ones won’t be with us for a long time, they will all be up for adoption in about 8 weeks, if everything goes well. But before I get ahead of myself, let’s start at the beginning.
I saw a post in my local Facebook group for someone looking to have someone rehome a mama and her 5 kittens. I realized it was the same woman who had previously let me buy a kitten from her. Our bud Georgie, who I’m pretty sure is this Mama’s previous litter baby. A lot of people had helpful suggestions, some not so much, but either way, I messaged her to let her know that I could take these ones for her.
While shelters are a great place for kittens around 8 weeks old to go, few are equipped to handle a few day old kittens and Momma. They take a decent amount of monitoring and if things start going downhill, quick intervention. We have the time and resources, so I figured ‘why not?’
Chris just happened to text me around the time I messaged the woman, asking for a favor.
“Sure, I have a favor too,” I replied.
“Yours first,” he replied. No way. I’ll get his done first and then he’ll be less likely to say no.
“Oh no. Your first,” I texted.
“Can you record the football game for me?” He asked.
Shit, that’s the favor? I thought. I was hoping for something a bit bigger so the debt would be a LITTLE more even.
“Sure!” I texted back.
“Now whats yours?”
Oh hell. Okay. Let’s do this.
“Well the lady I got Georgie from has another litter and the Momma she’s trying to get rid of. The kittens are 3 days old. Can we pick them up and adopt them out FOR REAL this time after we get the momma spayed?”
”We can even hand them all over to Connie”
“You can also say no too, that’s fine”
“Shelters are so full they’re charging a surrender fee”
“Also I made turkey breast. Just so you know”
…radio silence. This could be good or he could be saying “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! SON OF A BITCH” at the barber shop…
“Will we keep them in the sunroom?” he finally replied.
FUCK YES. I CAN GET THEM.
My poor husband ya’ll. Like, this bastard deserves a plaque for the most patient man on earth and a back rub every night for the shit I put him through.
There’s the beginning. They came in, all pretty flea infested and Mama must have been starving because as soon as Ana opened a can of wet food, she scarfed down two cans of it.
Speaking of Ana, her ability to care for animals just astounds me sometimes. She’ll do the hard, the nasty, the painful. All of it. She knows that the best way to help the kittens is to help Mama and has done just that. I’m so beyond proud of her. We’re keeping a log of any changes, what we do, what we notice, etc and slowly have seen so many changes already. We named Mama. Her name is Lucy. She’s a great mom. So I guess this is an 8 week school project for a girl who aspires to be a zoologist AND we get to help some pretty great little cats find the best of homes.
Eleni loves to come out, crouch by the basket and squeal “MAMA!” and pet her. It’s adorable.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ANY OF THEM, LET ME KNOW! Once they all receive shots and everyone is spayed and neutered, we will be rehoming them!
But for now? Bask in kitten cuteness.
